The Benefits of Strength Training in Tennis

The Benefits of Strength Training in Tennis

Practicing skills in any sport is important and tennis is no exception, but do you ever feel like no matter how much you practice you cannot quite be the player you want to be? Perhaps an element missing is strength training specific to tennis.

Strength training has become an important tool for competitive athletes in all sports. More and more players at every level are turning to this type of training to become the best they can while preventing injury and sustaining a healthy lifestyle.

We all know that cardio training is important for sufficient recovery in tennis, yet many players overlook the benefits of strength training for their tennis game. A tennis match is one of the best ways to burn calories, but what are we doing to build and tone muscles? One of the most important parts of being a balanced tennis player is building a strong muscular base. Combined with tennis-specific agility training, it will allow you to move more fluidly, as well as add pace to your shots. In addition to improving your game, strength training helps prevent injury and decreases fatigue.

Competitive tennis players balance their workouts both on and off the court. At The Edge, every client starts with a complete evaluation conducted by an experienced trainer. Then we establish a plan and regimen based on your goals, focusing on your correcting your weaknesses, improving your strengths, and teaching you exercises for maximum improvement for your type of game.
Each training session hits all of the major muscle groups including a total body lift, at least one type of squat (single leg, lunge, side lunge, front squat, squat, etc.), a push (push ups, dumbbell bench, cable press, db incline, etc.), a pull (pull ups, cable pulldowns, db row, etc.), and a hamstring. The amount of time is determined on the level and goals of the athlete, but in general, we recommend beginners train about 2-3 hours a week, and advanced players about 3-8 hours.
